Allergies

Allergies are abnormal reactions of the body to a previously encountered allergen introduced by inhalation, ingestion, injection, or skin contact, often manifested by itchy eyes, runny nose, wheezing, skin rash, or diarrhea.

Skin Allergies

Substances that come into contact with the skin, such as latex, are common causes of allergic reactions to the skin.

Types of skin allergies:
• Hives/Welts or Urticaria
• Edema or Angioedema
• Eczema or Atopic Dermatitis

Symptoms:
• Red raised itchy lesions
• Swelling of the skin
• Dry scaly skin

Test/Diagnosis:
• Skin prick test
• Patch test
• Blood test

Treatments:
• Allergy shots
• Medications
• SLIT

Treatments are dependent on cause

Pet Allergies

Pet allergy is an allergic reaction to proteins found in an animal’s skin cells, saliva, and urine. Most often, pet allergies are triggered by exposure to dander (dead flakes of skin) a pet sheds.

Symptoms:
• Watery eyes

Tree, Weed and Grass Pollen

Generally, pollens that cause allergies are those of anemophilous plants (pollen is dispersed by air currents.) Such plants produce large quantities of lightweight pollen which can be carried for great distances and are easily inhaled, bringing it into contact with the sensitive nasal passages.

Symptoms:
• Sneezing
• Watery eyes
• Itchy throat
• Headaches
• Cough
• Tiredness
• Nasal Congestion
• General malaise

Test/Diagnosis:
• Skin test
• Blood test

Treatments:
• Allergy shots
• Medications
• SLIT

Dust Mite Matter

Mold spores are a common component of household and workplace dust. When mold spores are present in large quantities, they can present a health hazard to humans, potentially causing allergic reactions and respiratory problems.

Symptoms:
• Sneezing
• Cough
• Post-nasal drip
• Runny nose or stuffy nose
• Wheezing
• Tiredness
• Headaches
• General malaise

Test/Diagnosis:
• Skin prick test
• Blood test

Treatments:
• Allergy shots
• Medications
• SLIT

Mold and Mildew

Dust mites feed on organic detritus such as flakes of shed human skin and flourish in the stable environment of dwellings. House dust mites are a common cause of asthma and allergic symptoms worldwide.

Symptoms:
• Congestion
• Runny nose
• Sneezing
• Nasal Congestion
• Cough
• Tiredness
